To say that the Corona Virus pandemic hit the whole world hard is an understatement. We certainly didn’t see that one coming and in a matter of weeks, the whole word was shut down. We all were forced to stay home and cling to our faith in God to see us through. Though we are not in the clear yet, these are certainly better days than we had a few months ago.
Through it all, there were some gospel songs that gave us hope during the heat of the pandemic. We simply found solace in them and they further renewed our faith in God to see us through. Here are five of the songs in no particular order
•WAY MAKER by Sinach.
This contemporary worship song written and sang by Nigerian Gospel music minister Sinach and released on the 30th of December 2015 has been ruling the airwaves since then. In fact, this track has enjoyed countless covers and remixes from several gospel music ministers world over so it was no surprise when Way Maker topped the US charts. The song was adopted for both Christian airplay and church worship during the first months of the pandemic. Not only that, during the black lives matter demonstration, it was an official movement song. Way maker still holds the top spot on the list of 100 gospel songs world over.
•PRAY FOR ME BY Kirk Franklin
Although this track had been released since 2015 in the losing my religion album (his twelfth studio album), it easily came to mind in the midst of the pandemic. We needed prayers and weren’t shy to ask our friends and families to pray for us. Another interesting fact to note is that because of the layered verses this song had, people from different corners of the world collaborated virtually to bring the song alive all singing together from our various locations. It brought us together not just in prayer but in one spirit and mind. We were united in prayer.
•THE BLESSING BY Kari Jobe
“The Lord bless you and keep you,
Make His face shine upon you
And be gracious to you
The Lord turn His face towards you
And your children
And their children…
Who can resist these powerful lyrics? Who can say ‘No’ to the alluring mid-tempo melody? I dare say a lot of people had this track on repeat and for many others placed it on their social media statuses was our own way of communicating their good wishes to loved ones.
•ILL BE THERE BY Dunsin Oyekan
Very well known for releasing spirit-filled Holy Ghost inspired songs at intervals, it is apparent that Dunsin Oyekan has rested his head on the chest of God and felt His (God) heartbeat. What put this song on this list however is the timeliness of the message embedded in this song? This was a reminder that God has promised to be there for us in times that are good or bad.
•TAFI BY Tomi Favored ft. TY Bello
So, multi-talented US-based Nigerian Gospel music minister Tomi favored in December of 2019 toured several churches in many cities in Nigeria and during that time she did a collaboration with TY Bello titled Tafi; ahausa word which loosely translates to ‘GO’ or ‘FLEE’. For some reason (instruction of the Holy Spirit I assume) it wasn’t released till 16th of May 2020. Quite frankly that song couldn’t have come at a better time. We joined in the declaration for corona virus to flee.
